At Word Scholars, we are
            un + lock + ing
the English writing system for dyslexic children and others.

Teacher and students inquire together, study together, and laugh together. Literacy work becomes joyful, and students become confident in their abilities to learn and grow.

"Scholars are people who notice things."

Have you noticed that matching up letters and sounds doesn't work for many English words? Have you been told that English is crazy? It isn't! It is a fascinating and unique written language with its own logical system. We simply need to dig deeper, looking beyond letters and sounds. Word scholars of all ages study morphology, etymology, phonology, and other facets of the our writing system to make sense, not just memorize.

Our work takes place one-on-one or in small groups. All study is tailored to each student and partially guided by the students. Areas of study may include word reading, spelling, sentence structure, reading comprehension, and writing composition. The critical and creative thinking skills students develop in our study of written language carry over into many other areas of study, as does the confidence students gain in discovering their own unique strengths.

"Knowledge emerges only through invention and re-invention,

through the restless, impatient, continuing, hopeful inquiry human

beings pursue in the world, with the world, and with each other.” ~ Paulo Feire

The only Word Scholars student who never seems to make any progress: Oscar. He just plays with the fidgets and takes naps on the bean bag.
